Five Indian nationals, who were lodged in Kurigram jail for a long time, did not return home as their sentences were not accepted by India. Today (Tuesday, May 31), on the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the 5 arrested Indian nationals were sent to the Burimari check post in Lalmonirhat district from Kurigram district jail for repatriation. But the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) said it was unable to receive them as it had no official instructions from the BSF. Under such circumstances, they were again brought to Kurigram Jail. The matter was confirmed by Ismail Hossain of Kurigram jail district.
According to the concerned sources, the court sentenced these Indian nationals to different terms for illegal entry at different times.
Since then they have been serving their sentences in the Kurigram District Jail in Bangladesh. The detainees had been lodged in the district jail for a long time due to lack of necessary steps to send them back even though the sentence was extended by six months.
The released are Selim Mia, son of Nur Islam Sheikh, a resident of Puran Kanaimara village under Singimari police station in SS Minekarchar Dhubri district of Assam. His RP No. 01/2021. Akher Zaman, son of Jahangir Alam of the same area. His RP No. 02/2021. Shah Alam, son of Sanwar Hossain. RP No-03/2021. Nuruzzaman, son of Churud Ali. RP No-06/2021. Besides, Alam Mia, son of Dudu Mia, a resident of Kuti village of Sadial in Dinhata police station of Cooch Behar district. RP No-06/2021.
Kurigram Public Prosecutor SM Abraham Lincoln said it was the constitutional right of any prisoner to be released as soon as his sentence expired. The governments of the two countries should make sincere efforts to implement it, especially in the case of citizens of different countries.
