Dr. Nasir Uddin, Pirojpur District Correspondent:
More than 24,000 people live in Parerhat union of Indurkani upazila of Pirojpur. Most of the people of this union use the only 14 km long road to reach the district or upazila town. However, for the last 5/6 years, the road has been in an unusable condition but no effective initiative has been taken to repair it or make it suitable for commuting. As a result, thousands of people in that union are in dire straits.
Starting from Chalna Bridge of Pirojpur-Togra road, Parerhat Union Parishad and Lahuri Bazar, the 14 km long road merges at Krishnachura junction of Pirojpur district town. Thousands of people from Nalbunia, Batajor, Laxidia, Baraikhali, Char Baraikhali, Gazipur, Darichar Gazipur, Lahuri and Char Lahuri villages of Parerhat Union use this road.
However, most of the 6 km carpeting road from Chalna Bridge to Lahuri Bazar has collapsed. For the last 6 years or so, it has been in a state of disrepair. The condition of this part of the road is so bad that in the dry season the whole body is covered in dust and in the rainy season one has to walk through mud. On the other hand, the renovation work of about 3 km section of the road started 4 years ago, but the contractor left it 3 years ago without completing the work. As a result, there is no end to human suffering in this part.
Besides, a 1.5 km brick road from Lahuri to Jhanjhania village was constructed about 30 years ago. Currently this part is completely unusable. Besides, the condition of the 6 km carpeting section from Jhanjhania to Baleshwar Bridge is also very bad.
Road users said that although the road has been in dilapidated condition for a long time, no initiative has been taken to repair it. As a result, every day passengers have to travel on this risky road acknowledging the severe suffering. Besides, accidents are constantly happening while walking on fragile roads. Ordinary people, businessmen and students of different educational institutions are not getting relief from this. There is anger among the locals about this.
Parerhat Union UP Chairman. Kamruzzaman Talukder Shaon admitted the bad condition of the road and demanded immediate repair. He said that due to the bad condition of the road, the local people’s representatives also have to answer to the union people in different ways.
LGED’s Indurkani Upazila Engineer Laila Mithun said the higher authorities have been informed in writing to cancel the work as the contractor left without doing the work on the tendered part. Besides, the estimate of the brick road has been prepared and sent to the higher authorities. He said work on the carpeting road would start as soon as the tender process was completed.
